Dubai is on a mission to become the world’s smartest city by 2021. Real Estate developers are required to aid the city’s transformation strategy by integrating smart technologies and data-driven insights into design, as well as construct and manage developments more efficiently. Damac Properties has been at the forefront of technology adoption in Dubai’s real estate sector and has championed a strategy that considers the future needs and aspirations of a smart and happy Dubai. A key part of Damac’s technology strategy is to mandate BIM on its projects to automate existing processes and to digitalise its business operations. In 2018, Damac appointed Atkins to support it with implementing this BIM transformation initiative across its business. Atkins, part of the SNC-Lavalin Group, has developed a number of processes, tools and applications that have automated Damac’s design and construction activities and enabled the achievement of its digital objectives. Damac has realised a series of benefits through the initiative which includes 70% time-saving in design and construction activities, 50% cost saving in estimating and budgeting activities, and a more efficient quality assurance process that has accelerated design review timescales. The digital tools and applications have been embedded into Damac’s project delivery practices.
