- 3D Printing: Besix; Kuka (printer); Sika (concrete mix supplier)
With the aim of introducing 3D concrete printing into construction, Besix had the goal of using the technology within one of its own projects. 3D concrete printing was executed by the use of the highly accurate 6-Axis Kuka robotic arm to print each bespoke panel that was subsequently installed on the building. The panels were printed offsite, but the printing facility was located only a few meters from the actual project. By doing so, it removed the need to transport panels to the onsite location.
The material used was locally sourced from the UAE and produced by Sika. Project complexity came from the need to fabricate multiple bespoke panels. By using a digital model of the building we were able to design and print the panels with a high level of accuracy to match design expectations, creating the largest 3D concrete printed facade in the world.
