Sam Stacey, Challenge Director: Transforming Construction, UK Research & Innovation, outlines the work done to help transform and digitalise the UK’s construction sector, and along the way points to learnings that can be used globally.
There were important challenges to change approaches to the built environment, and it requires a “critical mass of people” on board to begin implementing new approaches to construction, he said.
The focus of the work done by UK Research & Innovation was on three principles – a significant shift to using digital techniques, greater use of a manufacturing approach in construction and to address sustainability requirements.
“That provides benefits for everybody. For the government…. in terms of productivity, and therefore living standards and wages, good jobs across the regions….and impact at scale [that] transform the whole sector and not just niches and the issue of carbon reduction,” said Stacey.
