Rethinking building materials to deliver faster, greener and cheaper

Sustainability and environmental consciousness are becoming increasingly important. Innovations in building materials play a pivotal role in delivering faster, greener, and more cost-effective construction solutions. At a recent presentation by Waleed Alghamdi, the Sustainability Director at ROSHN, the focus was on “Embodied carbon scenarios for concrete, steel, and wood in KSA’s residential projects,” shedding light on how sustainable product selection is shaping the future of construction in Saudi Arabia.

Embracing Sustainable Building Materials

Waleed Alghamdi’s presentation at ROSHN highlighted the critical importance of choosing sustainable building materials, particularly in a region like Saudi Arabia, where construction is booming. Concrete, steel, and wood are fundamental components of any construction project, but they come with a significant environmental footprint due to their carbon emissions during production and transportation. Addressing these issues is vital to achieve a more sustainable and eco-friendly construction sector.

Concrete: The Carbon Conundrum

Concrete is a widely used building material, but it is also one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions in the construction industry. Alghamdi presented various scenarios for reducing the embodied carbon in concrete, including the use of alternative cementitious materials, optimized mix designs, and carbon capture technologies. By adopting these strategies, ROSHN is actively working to reduce the carbon footprint of its residential projects.

Steel: Exploring Alternatives

Steel is another staple in construction, but its production is energy-intensive and releases substantial carbon dioxide. Alghamdi’s presentation discussed alternatives to traditional steel, such as recycled steel and innovative composite materials. These alternatives not only reduce the environmental impact but also promote the efficient use of resources in construction.

Wood: A Renewable Option

Wood, a renewable resource, has gained popularity as a sustainable building material. Alghamdi emphasized the importance of responsibly sourced wood in construction, highlighting its lower carbon footprint compared to concrete and steel. Choosing wood for certain parts of residential projects can contribute to a more sustainable construction approach.

ROSHN Group: A Catalyst for Change

ROSHN, launched in 2020, stands out as a catalyst for change in the Saudi Arabian real estate sector. Aligned with Saudi Vision 2030’s ambitious goal of achieving 70% homeownership by 2030, ROSHN is taking significant steps to build better and contribute to sustainability and community development. Here’s how ROSHN is making a difference:

Building a Better Life: ROSHN’s commitment to developing over 400,000 homes by 2030 represents 30% of the country’s new housing stock. These communities are more than just structures; they are designed to create holistic living environments. With 850 mosques, 2400 schools, and green spaces, ROSHN ensures that its residents enjoy a well-rounded, high-quality lifestyle.

Empowering the Nation: ROSHN is not only constructing homes but also driving economic growth. By collaborating with local partners, the company creates job opportunities and contributes to the development of local supply chains. This not only boosts Saudi Arabia’s GDP but also fosters a sense of ownership and entrepreneurship within communities.

Honoring Heritage, Embracing Innovation: ROSHN’s unique approach blends modern amenities with the rich cultural heritage of Saudi cities. The result is vibrant and livable spaces that celebrate the Kingdom’s history while embracing a progressive future.

The presentation sheds light on the pivotal role of sustainable building materials in addressing the construction industry’s environmental challenges. As ROSHN strives to build exceptional neighbourhoods and contribute to Saudi Vision 2030, it sets a noteworthy example of how real estate developers can make a positive impact on the environment, economy, and society. ROSHN is not just constructing buildings; it is building a sustainable and brighter future for Saudi Arabia.
