AI application through the project lifecycle
At the Construction Technology Confex UAE 2024, Petros Zouzoulas, EMEA Head of Innovation at Parsons Corporation, gave a captivating presentation titled “AI Application Through the Project Lifecycle.” He discussed the transformative impact of AI on every phase of a construction project, from initial design to project handover.
He began by reflecting on how AI is reshaping the built environment, emphasizing the potential for technology to revolutionize how we plan, design, and execute construction projects. With AI’s ability to integrate large datasets and customize solutions based on unique environmental and project-specific factors, he believes it can significantly improve efficiency and sustainability in the construction process.
One of the most compelling parts of the presentation was the example of reality capture technology. By using AI-powered tools to create a digital twin of project sites, Parsons Corporation can remotely monitor and assess conditions on the ground. This technology has been used to track progress, identify potential issues, and provide real-time data to stakeholders, reducing the need for physical site visits and accelerating decision-making. Petros also shared how this technology allowed his team to reduce a 15-kilometer project survey in Dubai from six days to just one, resulting in substantial time and cost savings.
Petros showcased how AI is being integrated into cutting-edge construction techniques, such as autonomous tunneling. In a remarkable example of technological convergence, AI is being combined with swarm robotics and 3D printing to create a new approach to tunnel construction. This method allows for safer, more efficient tunneling by eliminating the need for humans to work underground, and it represents a glimpse into the future of construction innovation.
The presentation concluded by emphasizing the need for the construction industry to embrace AI and other emerging technologies. He acknowledged the challenges, such as skill gaps and the reluctance to adopt new tools, but stressed that the future of the industry depends on this digital transformation.
